Shopping in Worle

High Street

Gateway

 

Gateway super markets started by groccer J H Mills in Bristol in 1875 and branched out to Self Service Foodmarkets in the 1960s. Renamed Somerfeild in 1994. 

 

This photo of Gateway was before the new larger Gateway was built. It was one of its Flagship Stores and was the biggest buit at the time. 

Skidmores

 

Founded by Stanley Skidmore in 1919.

 

If you would like to know more about Skidmores there is a book available to buy in store celebrating 100 years of trading. 

Neathways 

 

Neathways House and grounds (bakery) went up for sale in 1982. (opposite the Co-Op)

The Bakery was founded in 1926 by Mr Neathway. 

Worle General Stores - Gunnings Stores

 

Loacated in Manchester Square at the top of The Scaurs

1800s Mr George Henvill - A Drapper 

1890 General Drappers owned by James Irish & Co. 

1895 J.W Spinner 

Henry and Ivy Gunninings (nee Spinner) took over and ran the shop.

The family ran the general stores until it ceased trading in 1985.

 

 

Parkers Bakery

 

Junction of Greenwood Road and the High Street. (now a block of flats).

Edwards Butchers 

 

 

The shop later become a Dry Cleaners - Avenue Cleaners re-located from Mendip Ave.

 

It is now Headlines Hair Salon 

 

Smiths Shoes

 

Smiths Shoe shop was on the High Street for a long time. This photo is when the shop was next to Banwell House and Central Garage. 

 

1n 1996 Mr B R Smith sold up and retired.
