News Update
45 lovely Worle people turned up for the AGM on 2nd September and we welcome many new members. Frank Gosden, already a stalwart of the committee, was unanimously elected as our new Research Co-ordinator and David Hart found himself co-opted to the committee, which is very good news. See committee page for details.
Peter Johnson's talk about his research into Worle's Tithe map was both educational and entertaining. His brand new digital version of the map, which includes apportionment details, is fascinating and colourful. Thank you Peter.
Our evening walk with Chris Richards was a great success, attended by 50 eager walkers. Thank you, Chris, for a fascinating insight into the history and geology of the area. Picture above. For more click on Village Walks on the top left
Researchers' supper on 19th August was a fun social event. See 'projects' on the links bar at the top for details and pictures.

We have been out and about publicising the Society and talking to people this July. Last Saturday we had a stall at the Family and Local History Open Day, held at St. Paul's Church Hall, and this weekend we were at the Northern Somerset Community Archaeology Open Day at the Town Quarry. Best sellers were the pamphlets, so we had better do some more!

Calendar night was fun and highly democratic, with the members chosing the 12 photographs to be featured on our effort for 2011. Henry Kingsbury made the front cover and is our January boy. For full details and a look at January go to Publications on the links at the top. Calendars will be available at the September meeting at £5.50p each, including envelope.

Members at the meeting on 3rd June, 2010. The middle picture shows Maurice Williams presenting the model No. 40 'bus to Andy Whitford, who won it in the raffle with the number 11 ticket.
The first meeting to be held in the new room, upstairs at Worle Community Centre was a success, thank goodness. The blackout blinds and ceiling fans were much appreciated and miraculously the data projector behaved well, having been tamed by Frank.
We were delighted to welcome three guests: two joined us unexpectedly from Birmingham, and Maurice Williams made the journey from Didcot.
The No. 40 'Bus raffle was drawn early in the evening and Maurice conducted the draw for us. It was won appropriately by Andy Whitford, whose parents ran the New Inn. The 'Bus terminus was outside the pub, so it could not have been better.
The main theme of the evening was Raye's research into Worle in World War 2, and included a look at the 58 men of the Home Guard. Have a look at the photos page. We were very grateful for the contributions brought along by members which will add great interest to the book when it appears.
Our meeting on the evening of election day, 6th May, was a welcome change from politics. John Crockford-Hawley and Howard Smith were on the panel and treated the members to some entertaining and insightful conversation on their involvement with the history of the area. Many thanks to both gentlemen, who will, of course, receive one of our calendars in due course. I suspect they may be back next year by popular request.

Committee meeting held on April 9th welcomed Bob Champ to our number. Bob was unanimously voted in as Membership Secretary and we are very glad to have him on board. It will certainly spread the load. He will be 'on the door' at the meeting on May 6th.
Our April Fools' Day quiz was a success, except for the technology letting us down! There were no prizes for highest scores, but each picture quiz sheet had a magic number for the draw, so 5 people went home with gifts.
